In this blog, we’re shining a spotlight on Jim’s journey through the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) and how it helped him strengthen his project governance, boost his confidence and refine the way he approaches every new challenge. Here’s his story:
Why did you decide to study the APM PMQ?
The APM Project Management Qualification was the natural progression after doing the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ). I shopped around quite a bit online to try and find the most suitable training group for me and my needs. After many phone calls with various providers who were out of touch with what they were selling, it was refreshing to meet the guys at Oxford College of Management who listened to my needs and were able to find the right course for me at the right price point.
Which study method did you choose for your PMQ qualification?
I chose the 5 day Face to Face Classes option. Whilst the cost was higher than doing the course online, I knew I’d get much more out of the session doing it in person and having the option to ask questions and challenge concepts. It was also great to meet and learn from other Project Manager’s during the course. There was a real mix of professional from industries wildly different to the renewable energy sector which I work in. This meant I could bounce ideas off those in the room and discuss how others have overcome certain challenges.
How did you find studying for your qualification?
I really enjoyed the whole process. I printed off the course book before the course and I dedicated a few hours an evening for studying for a few nights in the run up to the course. This really paid dividends for me as it felt like I hit the ground running and already had an understanding of the Association for Project Management (APM) concepts and the course materials.
What have you learnt from the qualification?
The learnings have genuinely been tenfold. I’ve learnt how to closely govern a project or programme by implementing the APM structure, and the importance of setting up my stall correctly right at the start by ensuring the business case is robust and signed off by the relevant stakeholders. The course taught me how the tools used at the start of project and the suite of documents developed in the early phases will guide everyone throughout the entirety of the project and ensure that I am setting myself up for success.
What advice would you give to others looking to study the APM PMQ?
Give it a go! If you’re looking to progress your professional development in the world of projects beyond the standard PFQ then this is the course for you.
