If you’re looking to advance your career in project management, two qualifications are likely to appear at the top of your shortlist: PMP® (Project Management Professional) and PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments). Both are globally recognised, both can boost your career prospects, and both are highly valued by employers, but they aren’t designed for the same people.
So, how do you decide which qualification is right for you? In this guide, we’ll compare PMP vs PRINCE2, looking at who each certification is designed for, the skills you’ll develop, eligibility requirements, career benefits and when one might be a better fit than the other.
| PMP | PRINCE2 |
|---|---|
| Awarded by PMI | Awarded by PeopleCert |
| Experience-based certification | Methodology-based qualification |
| Best for experienced project professionals | Suitable for beginners through to experienced practitioners |
| Covers predictive, Agile and hybrid delivery | Structured project management framework |
| Widely recognised worldwide | Particularly popular in the UK, Europe and the public sector |
What Is PMP?
The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is one of the world’s most respected project management credentials.
Unlike many qualifications, PMP doesn’t simply test your knowledge. It also requires you to demonstrate project management education and experience before you can sit the exam. PMP focuses on leading projects successfully, regardless of the methodology used. It covers predictive, Agile and hybrid approaches, reflecting the way many organisations now deliver projects.
It is particularly suited to professionals who already have experience managing projects and want to demonstrate their capability to employers.
What Is PRINCE2®?
PRINCE2 is one of the world’s most widely adopted project management methods. Rather than focusing on your previous experience, PRINCE2 teaches a structured framework for planning, managing and delivering projects.
The qualification is available at different levels:
- PRINCE2 Foundation – introduces the methodology and key principles.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner – demonstrates your ability to apply PRINCE2 in real project environments.
Because there are no experience requirements for Foundation, PRINCE2 is often the starting point for professionals moving into project management.
PMP vs PRINCE2: What’s the Difference?
Although both qualifications relate to project management, they approach the subject differently. PMP focuses on the knowledge, skills and judgement required to lead projects successfully. It assumes you already have practical experience and assesses how you would apply project management principles across different situations.
PRINCE2, on the other hand, teaches a specific project management methodology. You’ll learn a structured process for initiating, planning, controlling and closing projects using defined roles, governance and documentation.
A simple way to think about it is:
- PMP develops the project manager.
- PRINCE2 teaches a project management method.
Should I Choose PMP or PRINCE2?
PMP may be the better choice if you:
- Already manage projects or programmes.
- Have several years’ project experience.
- Want an internationally recognised professional credential.
- Work across multiple delivery approaches, including Agile and hybrid.
- Want to demonstrate leadership capability rather than knowledge of one methodology.
PRINCE2 may be a better fit if you:
- Are new to project management.
- Want to learn a structured project delivery method.
- Work in the UK public sector or organisations that use PRINCE2.
- Need a recognised qualification without prior project management experience.
- Want practical guidance for managing projects consistently.
But many experienced project managers hold both PMP and PRINCE2.
