Starting the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate can feel like a significant step, especially when balancing work, family and everyday responsibilities. For Jennie, studying CIPD had always been part of her long-term career plan. The challenge was finding the right time to begin.

In this blog, she shares her experience of completing the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate, from returning to study after raising her children to applying her learning in the workplace and planning her next steps.

What made you decide to study CIPD, and why was now the right time?

Studying CIPD has always been on my career goals; however, I have been raising my two children, so I never felt like I had the time I wanted to commit to studying. They were both in full-time education last year and I decided that it was time for me to start making my dream career a reality.

Why did you choose Oxford College of Management for your CIPD studies?

I did a lot of research, but I always saw reviews on how supportive Oxford College of Management was. From the first interaction they were open, honest and gave me access to the portal on a trial to see what it was like.

Support plays a crucial role when studying a CIPD Qualification, particularly for those returning to education after a break. Feeling confident in both the platform and the tutor support can make all the difference.

How did you find balancing studying alongside work and everyday life?

Because I chose to do my studying on demand, the balance worked really well for me. I studied in the evenings and tutors were always responsive to questions, as well as the support team.

Have you been able to apply what you learned in your role already? If so, how?

I have implemented a lot of what I learnt as I worked through the course into my role. Processes and policies have been revamped, as well as the employee life cycle. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of many different areas and become a more trusted and reliable person within my organisation.

What’s next for you now you’ve completed your CIPD qualification?

What’s next for me is to carry on for the next 6–12 months with putting into practice what I have learnt. I am aiming to start CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development with Oxford College of Management towards the end of this year. I am also undertaking some CIPD courses to understand in more depth particular areas of my Level 3 Foundation course that I enjoyed, like employment law.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting CIPD but feeling unsure?

To just do it! I had a lot of self-doubt about the capability I had in succeeding and completing this course. However, the resources, course content and the support given made me believe in myself, even when I didn’t pass a module first time.
