The CMI Level 5 in Management and Leadership is designed to provide middle managers with the skills needed to develop strategic plans and lead teams to success. This is the ideal qualification for those in roles such as Operations Manager or Divisional Manager, who typically report to a senior manager or business owner.

The CMI Level 5 explores key topics such as building stakeholder relationships, delivering operational plans, and managing projects and finance. You will gain the knowledge and experience to progress both as a leader and in your career. After completing the Level 5 qualification, and once you have 3 years or more experience in a management role, you will be eligible for CMI Chartered Manager status.

What’s Involved

Depending on how many units you take, you can gain either a CMI Level 5 Award, Certificate or Diploma. To achieve the Award, you must complete units that equal a minimum Total Unit Time (TUT) of 40 hours, which typically takes around 2–4 weeks to complete.

To achieve the Certificate, you must complete units that equal a minimum TUT of 130 hours, typically taking around 3–6 months to complete.

To achieve the Diploma, you must complete all units, with a minimum TUT of 370 hours, and this typically takes around 6–12 months to complete.

CMI 501 – Principles of Operational Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context

Unit Time – 70 Hours

This unit focuses on developing and improving your professional edge and personal effectiveness. You will evaluate an organisation’s management structure and you will explore theoretical models.

CMI 502 – Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success

Unit Time – 60 Hours

This unit explores the skills needed to develop, lead, and manage teams. You will identify techniques to assess current and future team capabilities, as well as to support, motivate and inspire teams.

CMI 509 – Managing Stakeholder Relationships

Unit Time – 40 Hours

This unit covers the importance of building long-lasting stakeholder relationships to organisational success. You will explore the types and purposes of stakeholder relationships and the skills needed to manage them effectively.

CMI 513 – Managing Projects to Achieve Results

Unit Time – 60 Hours

This unit concentrates on how to successfully manage projects and how to overcome any challenges. You will learn how to monitor progress, manage resources, and report on outcomes.

CMI 514 – Managing Change

Unit Time – 50 Hours

This unit considers change within organisations and how to maintain competitiveness. You will explore the theoretical models for the successful management of change, including communication and setting organisational objectives.

CMI 515 – Creating and Delivering Operational Plans

Unit Time – 60 Hours

This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to create and deliver operational plans. You will learn how to strategically develop a plan and how to monitor outcomes against objectives.

CMI 520 – Managing Finance

Unit Time – 60 Hours

This unit looks at financial management skills and how such knowledge can improve decision making skills and project management. You will learn how to set and manage budgets in line with regulatory and organisational guidelines.

Each unit is assessed via a practical work-based assignment. You must pass all assignments to gain your full qualification.

The CMI Level 5 qualification is entirely assessment based and you will need to complete mainly written assignments. These can be in the form of written accounts, reports, scenario and case studies, work-based evidence or presentations.

Each unit is graded on a ‘pass’, or ‘refer’ basis.

You are assigned to a personal assignment tutor and can submit a draft for feedback. You have the option to make two additional submissions before your final work is sent to the Chartered Management Institute for formal moderation. Each unit is graded on a pass or fail basis.
